Which cyclist won the 1983 Tour de France, his first victory in the race?

The story behind the answer

Laurent Fignon won the 1983 Tour de France, his first victory in the race.

Fignon was a 22-year-old French rider competing for Renault–Elf–Gitane when he took the overall title. He finished ahead of teammate and defending champion Bernard Hinault, who abandoned after suffering a knee injury during the race. Fignon’s victory made him one of the youngest Tour champions of the modern era.

The 1983 Tour covered 22 stages and 3,809 kilometres. Fignon defended his advantage through the Alps and Pyrenees and became the first French winner since Hinault’s 1981 victory. His second Tour title came in 1984, when he defeated Hinault by a large margin.

Fignon is sometimes confused with Greg LeMond because the two contested the exceptionally close 1989 Tour, which LeMond won by eight seconds. That result came six years after Fignon’s breakthrough Tour victory.
