Which cyclist was nicknamed “The Cannibal” during his career?

The story behind the answer

Belgian cyclist Eddy Merckx was nicknamed “The Cannibal” during his career.

The nickname reflected Merckx’s relentless desire to win, even when he had already taken major victories in a race. French rider Christian Raymond reportedly used the term after hearing Raymond Poulidor’s daughter describe Merckx as someone who wanted to win everything.

Merckx dominated professional road cycling from the 1960s into the 1970s. He won the Tour de France five times, the Giro d’Italia five times and the Vuelta a España once, while also taking one-day classics and world titles.

“The Cannibal” is distinct from Merckx’s other famous label, “The Greatest,” which is often used more broadly when discussing his career record. The nickname does not refer to a cycling team, race or official award.
