Which cyclist set a 54.526-kilometre UCI Hour Record in 2015?

The story behind the answer

Bradley Wiggins set a 54.526-kilometre UCI Hour Record in 2015.

The British cyclist achieved the mark on 7 June 2015 at the Lee Valley VeloPark velodrome in London. Wiggins covered 54.526 kilometres in 60 minutes, surpassing the previous UCI Hour Record of 52.937 kilometres set by Alex Dowsett earlier that year.

Wiggins used a track bicycle and rode alone behind no pacers, as required by the event’s rules. The attempt drew major attention because he was already an Olympic champion, Tour de France winner, and multiple world champion on both road and track.

The record did not remain permanent: Victor Campenaerts set a new mark of 55.089 kilometres in 2019. Chris Boardman’s famous 1996 distance of 56.375 kilometres belongs to a different equipment category under earlier rules, so it is not the direct comparison with Wiggins’s modern UCI record.
