Which cyclist holds the record for the most victories in cycling’s five Monuments?

The story behind the answer

Eddy Merckx holds the record for the most victories in cycling’s five Monuments, with 19 wins.

The Monuments are Milan–San Remo, the Tour of Flanders, Paris–Roubaix, Liège–Bastogne–Liège and the Giro di Lombardia. Merckx won Milan–San Remo seven times, Liège–Bastogne–Liège five times, the Tour of Flanders three times, Paris–Roubaix three times and the Giro di Lombardia once.

His 19 Monument victories form part of the reason he is widely regarded as one of the greatest cyclists in history. Merckx combined one-day success with Grand Tour victories, world titles and track achievements.

Roger De Vlaeminck is second on the all-time Monument list with 11 wins and is the only rider besides Merckx to have won all five. A common mistake is to confuse the Monuments with the Grand Tours: the Monuments are prestigious one-day races, while the Giro, Tour and Vuelta are multi-stage events.
