Which cyclist completed cycling’s Triple Crown in 1987?
Answer
Stephen Roche
Answer
Stephen Roche
Stephen Roche completed cycling’s Triple Crown in 1987.
Roche won the Giro d’Italia, Tour de France, and UCI Road World Championship road race in the same calendar year. He became only the second male cyclist to achieve that combination, after Eddy Merckx did it in 1974.
Roche’s 1987 season began with victory in the Giro, where he defeated Roberto Visentini. He then won the Tour de France, beating Pedro Delgado by 40 seconds. In September, Roche captured the world road title in Villach, Austria, completing the rare three-part achievement.
“Triple Crown of Cycling” is an informal term rather than a single official award. Some discussions use slightly different definitions, but the standard modern meaning is the Giro, Tour, and World Championship in one year. Roche’s feat remains one of the defining seasons in professional road cycling.
