Which cycling classic is nicknamed La Doyenne?
Answer
Liège–Bastogne–Liège
Answer
Liège–Bastogne–Liège
Liège–Bastogne–Liège is the cycling classic nicknamed La Doyenne.
The French phrase La Doyenne means “the Old Lady,” referring to Liège–Bastogne–Liège's status as the oldest of the major one-day classics. The Belgian race was first held in 1892 and traditionally links Liège with Bastogne and back through the hilly Ardennes region.
Its steep climbs and repeated changes in gradient make it one of the hardest races on the professional calendar. The route has changed over time, but climbs such as La Redoute and the Côte de la Roche-aux-Faucons have become closely associated with the event.
Liège–Bastogne–Liège is one of cycling's five Monuments, the sport's most prestigious one-day races. It is sometimes confused with the Tour of Flanders, another Belgian Monument, but that race is known for cobbled climbs and is not called La Doyenne.
