Which C.S. Lewis novel was published in 1956 under the title Till We Have Faces?
Answer
Till We Have Faces
Answer
Till We Have Faces
C.S. Lewis’s 1956 novel is titled Till We Have Faces.
The complete title is Till We Have Faces: A Myth Retold. Published in 1956, it reworks the ancient myth of Cupid and Psyche through the viewpoint of Orual, a princess and later queen of the fictional kingdom of Glome. The novel is Lewis’s final completed work of fiction.
Unlike the Narnia books, Till We Have Faces is aimed primarily at adults and uses a psychologically complex first-person narrator. Lewis drew on classical mythology, especially Apuleius’s The Golden Ass, but transformed the source into a meditation on love, jealousy, identity, and self-knowledge. The title comes from the idea that people cannot truly confront one another—or the divine—until they have developed honest identities. It is sometimes confused with Lewis’s explicitly theological nonfiction, such as The Problem of Pain, but it is a novel.
