In C.S. Lewis’s Narnia series, what kind of creature is Reepicheep?

The story behind the answer

Reepicheep is a mouse in C.S. Lewis’s Narnia series.

Reepicheep is a talking mouse and one of Narnia’s most courageous characters. He appears prominently in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader and also features in Prince Caspian and The Last Battle. Although physically small, he is a skilled swordsman, a devoted friend, and a champion of honor and adventure.

Readers sometimes remember him simply as a comic animal companion, but Lewis gives Reepicheep a serious role. His defining desire is to reach Aslan’s country, and in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader he continues beyond the world’s eastern limits. His courage and longing make him more than a sidekick.

Reepicheep’s species can be confused with other talking animals in Narnia, including badgers, foxes, and beavers. Lewis’s use of a mouse creates a deliberate contrast between stature and bravery. The character’s name and heroic personality have made him one of the most recognizable figures in the series beyond the Pevensie children.
