Which C.S. Lewis novel opens with four children entering Narnia through a wardrobe?

The story behind the answer

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe opens with four children entering Narnia through a wardrobe. Published in 1950, it was the first Narnia book C.S. Lewis released.

The children are Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy Pevensie. Lucy discovers the passage while exploring an old wardrobe in a country house during the Second World War. Inside, she meets the faun Mr. Tumnus and learns that the land is suffering under the rule of the White Witch.

The novel introduces major elements of Lewis’s imagined world, including Aslan, the White Witch, the city of Cair Paravel, and the long winter in Narnia. Although it was the first book published, some modern editions arrange the series by the fictional chronology of Narnia instead.

The wardrobe is not the entrance used by every Narnian character or in every book. It is the distinctive portal for the Pevensie children’s first adventure and gives the novel its title.
