Which C.S. Lewis novel features the talking horse Bree?

The story behind the answer

The Horse and His Boy is the C.S. Lewis novel that features the talking horse Bree.

Published in 1954, this is the fifth book in the original publication sequence of The Chronicles of Narnia. Its central characters are Shasta, a boy from Calormen, and Bree, a talking warhorse. They flee together toward the northern kingdom of Archenland and the land of Narnia.

Bree is proud, experienced, and sometimes overly impressed by his own knowledge. His journey with Shasta gives the story both adventure and comic contrast, especially as the pair encounter another talking horse, Hwin, and the girl Aravis. The plot also includes the attempted invasion of Archenland and Narnia by the Calormene prince Rabadash.

The title can be confused with other Narnia novels because many of them involve talking animals. Bree’s distinctive role, however, belongs specifically to The Horse and His Boy, which is set during the reign of the Pevensie kings and queens.
