Which C.S. Lewis book was dedicated to his goddaughter Lucy Barfield?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis dedicated The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe to his goddaughter Lucy Barfield.

The dedication appears at the beginning of the book and addresses Lucy directly. Lewis tells her that she will eventually be too old for fairy tales, but that she may one day return to them when she is old enough to read them again. The dedication is one of the best-known personal details connected with the Narnia series.

Lucy Barfield was the daughter of Owen Barfield, a close friend and fellow member of the literary discussion group known as the Inklings. Lewis’s dedication helped give the fictional character Lucy Pevensie a memorable connection to a real child in his circle, although the character is not simply a portrait of Barfield.

The book was first published in 1950 and became the first Narnia novel released by publication order. It introduces the wardrobe, the land of Narnia, Aslan, and the Pevensie children.
