Answer
The Screwtape Letters
The Screwtape Letters features the demonic correspondent Screwtape.
C.S. Lewis’s book was published in 1942 and is presented as a series of letters from Screwtape, an experienced demon, to his inexperienced nephew Wormwood. The letters offer advice about tempting a human subject, allowing Lewis to discuss moral psychology through satire and inversion.
The book is not a conventional narrative told from a human viewpoint. Its unusual structure makes the reader infer the spiritual danger by observing what the demons praise, encourage, or misunderstand. Lewis uses the device to examine distraction, pride, resentment, fear, and false ideas of virtue.
A later short piece, “Screwtape Proposes a Toast,” was published separately before being added to some editions. Screwtape is therefore not simply another Narnian villain; he belongs to Lewis’s adult Christian satire.
