Which C.S. Lewis book features the demon Screwtape writing letters to his nephew Wormwood?

The story behind the answer

The Screwtape Letters features the demon Screwtape writing to his nephew Wormwood.

C.S. Lewis’s epistolary novel was first published in book form in 1942. It consists of advice from Screwtape, a senior tempter in Hell, to Wormwood, an inexperienced tempter assigned to influence a human “patient.” The letters reverse ordinary moral instruction by presenting temptation from the demons’ perspective.

Lewis used the format to examine pride, distraction, vanity, resentment, and self-deception. The book is not a handbook for occult practice; it is a satirical Christian work in which demonic advice reveals the weaknesses of human behavior. Lewis later wrote a short concluding piece, “Screwtape Proposes a Toast,” which was published separately before being included in later editions.
