Which C.S. Lewis book begins with four children entering a magical world through a wardrobe?

The story behind the answer

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe begins with four children entering Narnia through a wardrobe.

Published in 1950, the novel follows Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy Pevensie after they are sent away from London during the Second World War. Lucy discovers that an old wardrobe opens into Narnia, a world trapped in winter under the rule of the White Witch.

The book is the most widely read entry in The Chronicles of Narnia and was the first Narnia novel Lewis wrote for publication. In the series’ internal chronology, however, it follows The Magician’s Nephew, which explains Narnia’s creation and the origin of the wardrobe’s connection.

The title’s lion is Aslan, while the witch is Jadis, the White Witch. The story combines wartime displacement, talking animals, mythology, and Christian themes in a compact children’s fantasy adventure.
