Which C.S. Lewis book began The Chronicles of Narnia in 1950?

The story behind the answer

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe began The Chronicles of Narnia in 1950.

Published by Geoffrey Bles, the novel introduced readers to the fictional land of Narnia through four English children: Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy Pevensie. Lucy discovers Narnia by entering a wardrobe in the country house where the children are staying during the Second World War.

The book includes the White Witch, the lion Aslan, and the repeated image of a land trapped in winter. Although it is the first Narnia book Lewis published, some reading orders place The Magician’s Nephew first because that story occurs earlier in Narnian chronology.

Lewis wrote seven Narnia novels. The series became a major children’s fantasy work, and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe has been adapted for radio, television, stage, and film.
