Which course hosted Greg Norman's 1986 Open Championship victory?

The story behind the answer

Greg Norman’s 1986 Open Championship victory was hosted by Turnberry. The tournament took place on Turnberry’s Ailsa Course in South Ayrshire, Scotland, from 17 to 20 July 1986.

It was Norman’s first major championship. He surged into contention with a second-round 63, then completed the event at even-par 280. That score gave him a five-stroke victory over Gordon J. Brand, with Bernhard Langer and Ian Woosnam tied for third.

Turnberry had hosted The Open only once before, in 1977, when Tom Watson defeated Jack Nicklaus in the famous “Duel in the Sun.” That earlier championship produced a much lower winning score, so the difficult 1986 conditions made Norman’s performance especially notable.

A common mix-up is confusing the venue with the championship’s location: Turnberry is the resort and course, while the Ailsa Course is the specific layout used. The 18th hole was later renamed “Duel in the Sun” in 2003, commemorating the 1977 contest.
