Which course has hosted The Open Championship the most times?

The story behind the answer

The Old Course at St Andrews has hosted The Open Championship more times than any other course. It has staged the championship 30 times, most recently in 2022.

Located in St Andrews, Fife, Scotland, the Old Course is widely known as the “home of golf.” Its Open history began in 1873, when Tom Kidd won the championship there. The course’s unusual double greens, deep bunkers, broad fairways, and famous Road Hole have made it one of golf’s most recognizable venues.

St Andrews also helped shape modern golf: in 1764, its layout was reduced from 22 holes to 18, helping establish the standard round used worldwide. The Open traditionally returns there about every five years, although scheduling has varied across the championship’s history. Prestwick is a common mix-up because it hosted the first Open and staged 24 championships, but St Andrews has the higher total. Carnoustie, Royal Liverpool, and Royal Birkdale have all hosted fewer editions.
