Which country’s national anthem is the “Himno Nacional Mexicano”?

The story behind the answer

The “Himno Nacional Mexicano” is the national anthem of Mexico.

Mexico adopted its national anthem in 1943, although the winning words and music had been selected much earlier. Poet Francisco González Bocanegra wrote the lyrics in 1853, and Jaime Nunó composed the music in 1854. The anthem was first performed publicly on 15 September 1854 at the Santa Anna Theatre in Mexico City.

Its lyrics focus on defending the homeland, reflecting the political and military concerns of nineteenth-century Mexico. The official full version contains ten stanzas and a refrain, but public performances generally use only selected portions.

The title simply means “Mexican National Anthem” in Spanish. It should not be confused with “Cielito Lindo,” a famous Mexican song that is culturally associated with Mexico but is not the country’s official anthem.
