Answer
Land der Berge, Land am Strome
Austria’s national anthem is officially titled “Land der Berge, Land am Strome,” adopted in 1947.
The German title translates as “Land of Mountains, Land by the River.” Paula von Preradović wrote the lyrics, which were selected through a competition after the Second World War. The melody was long attributed to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, although the attribution has been debated by historians and musicologists.
Austria adopted the anthem to replace “Sei gesegnet ohne Ende,” the former imperial and republican anthem associated with an earlier political era. The new text emphasizes Austria’s landscape, cultural heritage, and status as a free and independent country.
Since 2012, the official lyrics have included gender-inclusive wording in one line, changing references to “great sons” to “great sons and daughters.” This update is why older recordings and translations may not match the wording used in current official versions.
