Which country won the men’s team table tennis gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics?

The story behind the answer

China won the men’s team table tennis gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The men’s team event replaced the doubles event in the Olympic programme beginning at the 2008 Games. China defeated Germany in the final, while South Korea won the bronze medal. The competition was played at Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics Gymnasium.

The team format combined singles and doubles matches, so it tested national depth as well as individual skill. China’s victory in Beijing formed part of its broad dominance of Olympic table tennis, which also included the men’s and women’s singles titles at those Games.

This result should not be confused with the four-gold sweep at the 2012 London Olympics, when China won every table tennis gold medal available. In Beijing, the team events were part of the sport’s newer Olympic format.
