Which country won the inaugural ATP Cup in 2020?
Answer
Serbia
Answer
Serbia
Serbia won the inaugural ATP Cup in 2020. In the final at Sydney’s Ken Rosewall Arena, Serbia defeated Spain 2–1 on January 12, with Novak Djokovic securing the decisive doubles victory alongside Viktor Troicki.
The ATP Cup was a new men’s team competition created by the Association of Tennis Professionals. Its first edition ran from January 3 to 12 across Brisbane, Perth, and Sydney, serving as an early-season event before the Australian Open. Twenty-four national teams were divided into six groups, with the best teams advancing to a knockout stage.
The final was closely contested. Roberto Bautista Agut defeated Dušan Lajović for Spain, but Djokovic beat Rafael Nadal in singles to level the tie. Djokovic and Troicki then defeated Spain’s Pablo Carreño Busta and Feliciano López in doubles to give Serbia the championship.
The ATP Cup is easy to confuse with the Davis Cup because both are international men’s team events. The ATP Cup was organized by the ATP and awarded ranking points, while the Davis Cup is administered by the International Tennis Federation. The ATP Cup was later discontinued after its 2022 edition.
