Which country won the first Olympic gold medal in men’s rugby sevens in 2016?

The story behind the answer

Fiji won the first Olympic gold medal in men’s rugby sevens in 2016.

Rugby sevens returned to the Olympic program at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games after rugby had been absent from the Olympics for 92 years. Fiji defeated Great Britain 43–7 in the men’s final at Deodoro Stadium.

The victory was Fiji’s first Olympic medal in any sport and became one of the most celebrated achievements in the country’s sporting history. The match also set a record for the largest winning margin in an Olympic rugby final.

Olympic sevens differs from traditional 15-a-side rugby union through its shorter matches, smaller teams and faster open-field play. The men’s tournament used 12 teams in Rio.
