Indonesia won the first Olympic badminton gold medal, awarded at Barcelona 1992.
Badminton made its official Olympic debut at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. Indonesia’s Susi Susanti won the women’s singles title, becoming the first Olympic badminton champion. Her victory was followed by Indonesian success in the men’s singles event, where Alan Budikusuma won gold.
The Barcelona programme included men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles and women’s doubles. Mixed doubles was added to the Olympic badminton programme at Atlanta 1996.
Indonesia’s early Olympic success helped establish the country as one of badminton’s major powers. China and South Korea have also become dominant nations in Olympic badminton, but Indonesia holds the distinction associated with the first Olympic gold medal in the sport.
