China won the first official esports gold medals at the 2022 Asian Games.
The Hangzhou Asian Games were held in 2023 after a one-year postponement, but they retained the 2022 name. Esports made its official medal-sport debut at the event, with competitions in titles including Arena of Valor Asian Games Version, Peace Elite Asian Games Version, League of Legends, Dota 2, and Street Fighter V.
China won gold in the first esports final, defeating Malaysia in Arena of Valor. It also won several other esports events, including League of Legends and Dota 2, making the host nation the most successful country in the discipline’s debut.
Esports had appeared as a demonstration event at the 2018 Asian Games, but demonstration results did not count toward the official medal table. The 2022 Asian Games therefore marked the first time esports medals were formally awarded at the continental multi-sport event.
