Which country was the world’s largest producer of geothermal electricity in 2023?

The story behind the answer

The United States was the world’s largest producer of geothermal electricity in 2023.

U.S. geothermal generation is concentrated especially in the western states, where tectonic activity and accessible underground heat provide suitable resources. California’s Geysers field is the country’s most famous geothermal complex, while Nevada, Utah, Hawaii, and other states also operate plants.

Geothermal stations use underground heat in several ways. Dry-steam plants use steam directly, flash plants reduce the pressure of hot water to create steam, and binary-cycle plants transfer heat to a secondary fluid with a lower boiling point.

Iceland is often incorrectly selected because geothermal energy supplies a very large share of its heating and electricity. Indonesia and the Philippines are also major producers. The United States leads in total geothermal electricity generation, while rankings by percentage of national electricity can look very different.
