India was the sole host of the 2023 Cricket World Cup.
The tournament ran from 5 October to 19 November 2023 and was staged across 10 venues in India. It was the fourth men’s World Cup held in India, but the first hosted entirely by the country. Earlier editions involving India had been co-hosted with other nations, including Pakistan in 1987 and Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in 2011.
The final was played at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, while the semi-finals took place at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium and Kolkata’s Eden Gardens. Ten teams competed in a single round-robin group stage, followed by semi-finals and a final, producing 48 matches in total.
India entered as the home side and won all nine of its group matches before defeating New Zealand in the semi-final. However, Australia won the final by six wickets. Hosting duties therefore gave India home conditions and strong local support, but did not guarantee the championship.
