Which country was the first international market for KFC?

The story behind the answer

Canada was KFC’s first international market.

KFC expanded outside the United States by opening a restaurant in Canada in 1955. This made Canada the company’s first overseas market and preceded later expansion into countries across Europe, Asia, Africa, and Oceania.

The Canadian launch occurred only a few years after the first Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise opened in Utah. Early international growth benefited from the brand’s standardized preparation methods and recognizable seasoning, while franchise operators adapted restaurant operations to local conditions.

Canada is often confused with other early KFC markets, particularly the United Kingdom and Japan. The United Kingdom became an important European market later, while Japan became especially associated with KFC’s Christmas promotions. Neither was the first country outside the United States.
