Which country singer became the first woman to win the CMA Entertainer of the Year award?

The story behind the answer

Loretta Lynn became the first woman to win the Country Music Association’s Entertainer of the Year award.

Lynn received the honor in 1972, making her the first female solo artist to win the CMA’s top award. By that point, she had already established herself as one of country music’s most important songwriters and performers, with hits including “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” “You Ain’t Woman Enough,” and “The Pill.”

The award recognized more than record sales. Lynn’s performances, songwriting, radio presence, and cultural impact helped expand the role of women in country music. Her songs often addressed marriage, work, motherhood, poverty, and women’s independence in unusually direct language.

Later female winners included Dolly Parton, Barbara Mandrell, Reba McEntire, and Taylor Swift. Lynn’s 1972 victory is distinct from her other major milestones, including becoming the first woman named Entertainer of the Year by the Academy of Country Music in 1975.
