Which country shares Denmark’s only land border?
Answer
Germany
Answer
Germany
Denmark’s only land border is with Germany.
The border runs for about 68 kilometres across the Jutland Peninsula. It separates Denmark’s Southern Denmark Region from Germany’s Schleswig-Holstein state. Unlike Denmark’s mainland border, the country’s other international boundaries are maritime or involve autonomous territories within the Kingdom of Denmark.
The present border was established after the 1920 Schleswig plebiscites, when Northern Schleswig voted to become part of Denmark. Southern Schleswig remained in Germany. The result reunited Northern Schleswig with Denmark and produced much of the modern frontier.
A common mix-up is to name Sweden, because Sweden is Denmark’s closest Scandinavian neighbour and is linked to Denmark by the Øresund Bridge. That connection crosses water, however, so Sweden is not a country with which Denmark has a land border.
