Japan opened McDonald's first restaurant in 1971, helping establish the brand in East Asia.
The first Japanese McDonald's opened in Tokyo's Ginza district. The venture brought McDonald's recognizable name, restaurant design, packaging, and service system to a major Asian market while adapting products and business practices to local conditions.
Japan is sometimes confused with China or South Korea in general discussions of McDonald's Asian expansion. China opened its first McDonald's much later, in 1990, while South Korea opened its first location in 1988. Japan's 1971 opening made it one of the company's earliest and most influential international markets.
