Which country legend released the 1969 album At San Quentin?

The story behind the answer

Johnny Cash released the 1969 live album At San Quentin.

The album was recorded on February 24, 1969, during Cash’s performance for inmates at San Quentin State Prison in California. It followed his earlier prison concert album, At Folsom Prison, which had been recorded in 1968. The San Quentin performance became especially famous because the audience’s reaction was energetic and sometimes confrontational.

At San Quentin included performances of songs such as “A Boy Named Sue,” “I Walk the Line,” and “Starkville City Jail.” “A Boy Named Sue” became one of Cash’s best-known live recordings and reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album itself topped the Billboard country album chart.

A common mix-up is confusing At San Quentin with At Folsom Prison. Both are Johnny Cash live albums recorded at California prisons, but At San Quentin was recorded in 1969, one year after the Folsom concert.
