Which country legend pioneered the “Carter scratch” guitar technique in the Carter Family?
Answer
Maybelle Carter
Answer
Maybelle Carter
Maybelle Carter pioneered the “Carter scratch” guitar technique in the Carter Family.
The technique combines a melody played on the bass strings with rhythmic strumming on the treble strings, allowing one guitarist to suggest both lead and accompaniment. Maybelle developed the approach while performing with the original Carter Family, whose recordings helped define early commercial country music.
Her style was particularly influential because guitar was still often treated as an accompanying instrument in rural string bands. By bringing the melody forward on the lower strings, she made the instrument sound more independent and prominent. Later country, folk, bluegrass, and rock guitarists studied variations of the method.
Maybelle is also widely known by the professional name Mother Maybelle Carter. Sara Carter was the group’s lead vocalist and autoharp player, while A. P. Carter handled much of the songwriting and collecting. Those roles are sometimes blended together in summaries of the Carter Family, but the guitar innovation belongs specifically to Maybelle.
