Which country is the okapi native to?

The story behind the answer

The okapi is native to the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Its natural range is concentrated in the dense forests of the northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, especially the Ituri Forest. The species is the only living member of its genus, Okapia, and is closely related to the giraffe rather than to zebras.

The okapi’s striped hindquarters can make it look zebra-like, but the stripes are not evidence of a close relationship with zebras. They may help calves follow their mothers through shadowy forest vegetation and may also provide camouflage.

Okapis were unknown to Western science until the late nineteenth century. Conservationists face threats from habitat loss, hunting, and instability in parts of their range. The species is protected in reserves including Okapi Wildlife Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
