Which country is the largest sovereign state where Spanish is an official language?

The story behind the answer

Argentina is the largest sovereign state where Spanish is an official language, covering about 2.78 million square kilometres.

Argentina occupies much of the southern cone of South America. It extends from the subtropical north to Tierra del Fuego and the southern Andes, giving it a great range of climates and landscapes.

Mexico has a larger population, and Spain has a major historical role in the Spanish-speaking world, but Argentina is larger than both by total area. Spanish is the principal and de facto national language of Argentina, although the country does not designate a single official language in its constitution in the same way some countries do.

Argentina borders Chile, Bolivia, Paraguay, Brazil and Uruguay. Buenos Aires, on the Río de la Plata, is the capital and largest metropolitan centre.
