Which country is the largest of the world’s three Guianas by area?

The story behind the answer

Guyana is the largest of the three Guianas by area.

The Guianas are the northeastern South American territories of Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana. Guyana covers about 214,969 square kilometres, making it larger than Suriname and French Guiana.

Guyana is an independent country, Suriname is an independent country, and French Guiana is an overseas department and region of France. All three lie on the Atlantic-facing northeastern coast of South America and include extensive tropical forest and river systems.

The region is sometimes confused with Venezuela because Venezuela borders Guyana to the west. Venezuela is much larger, but it is not one of the three Guianas. Another common error is treating French Guiana as a sovereign country; constitutionally, it is part of France and the European Union. Guyana’s capital, Georgetown, is on the Atlantic coast.
