Which country is the largest of the world’s ten biggest countries that lies entirely in the Western Hemisphere?

The story behind the answer

Canada is the largest of the world’s ten biggest countries that lies entirely in the Western Hemisphere.

Canada is located wholly west of the prime meridian and north of the equator, making all of its territory part of the Western Hemisphere. Its total area is about 9.98 million square kilometres.

The United States and Brazil are also among the largest countries in the Western Hemisphere, but both are smaller than Canada. Russia and China are larger or comparable in global rankings, yet they are primarily or partly in the Eastern Hemisphere.

Canada’s position includes a vast mainland, Arctic islands and numerous inland lakes. Its northern location also gives it a substantial area within the Arctic region, while most of its population lives in a narrow band close to the United States border.
