Which country is the largest of the 11 countries in Southeast Asia by area?

The story behind the answer

Indonesia is the largest country in Southeast Asia by total area.

Indonesia covers about 1.90 million square kilometres and stretches across a vast archipelago between the Indian and Pacific oceans. It is made up of more than 17,000 islands, although the exact count varies with mapping and definitions of an island.

Indonesia’s size exceeds that of Myanmar, the second-largest Southeast Asian country by area. Its territory spans the equator and includes major islands such as Sumatra, Java, Borneo’s Indonesian portion, Sulawesi, and New Guinea’s western half.

Indonesia is also Southeast Asia’s most populous country and the world’s fourth-most populous country in commonly cited recent rankings. Jakarta has historically been the national capital, while Nusantara is being developed as a new capital in East Kalimantan.
