Algeria is the largest member of the Arab League by total area.
Algeria’s area is about 2.38 million square kilometres, larger than that of every other Arab League member. The Arab League is a regional organization founded in 1945 to promote cooperation among Arab states; Algeria joined in 1962 after independence.
Most of Algeria lies in the Sahara, which explains how it has such a large area despite its population being concentrated in the northern coastal zone. Saudi Arabia is the second-largest Arab League member by area, followed by Sudan in commonly used rankings.
A common mistake is to identify Saudi Arabia because it is the largest Arab country in Asia and a major regional power. However, the Arab League includes countries in both Africa and Asia. Algeria’s inclusion in North Africa gives it the overall area lead across the organization.
