Which country is the largest landlocked country in East Asia?

The story behind the answer

Mongolia is the largest landlocked country in East Asia.

Mongolia covers about 1.56 million square kilometers between Russia and China. It has no coastline and is dominated by steppe grasslands, deserts, mountains, and broad open plains. The Gobi Desert occupies much of its southern region.

Mongolia’s location gives it a distinctive geographic position: it is one of the world’s most sparsely populated sovereign countries and is separated from the sea by China and Russia. Ulaanbaatar, located in a valley near the country’s north-central region, is the capital and principal urban center.

Kazakhstan is much larger and is sometimes grouped partly with East Asia, but it is generally classified primarily in Central Asia. China is larger still, yet it is not landlocked because it has a long Pacific coastline.
