Which country is the largest in Central America by area?

The story behind the answer

Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America by area.

Nicaragua covers about 130,000 square kilometres, making it larger than Honduras, Guatemala, Panama, Costa Rica, Belize, and El Salvador. It occupies the central part of the isthmus connecting North and South America.

The country is known for its two large freshwater lakes, Lake Managua and Lake Nicaragua. Lake Nicaragua is the largest lake in Central America and is linked to the Caribbean Sea by the San Juan River. Nicaragua also has Pacific volcanic ranges, Caribbean lowlands, and tropical forests.

Managua is the capital and largest city. Nicaragua's Caribbean coast is considerably wetter and less densely populated than its Pacific side. The country's location between two oceans has made canal routes and transit projects an important part of its history.
