The Tropic of Cancer crosses China at about 23.4 degrees north latitude, making China the largest country among the nations through which this important parallel passes. The line also crosses countries including India, Mexico, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
In China, the Tropic of Cancer passes through southern parts of the country, including areas associated with Guangdong, Guangxi and Yunnan. The exact latitude shifts gradually because Earth’s axial tilt changes over time, but the geographic label remains tied to the northernmost latitude where the Sun can appear directly overhead.
The Tropic of Cancer is one of two tropical circles. Its counterpart, the Tropic of Capricorn, crosses southern-hemisphere countries. The tropics lie between these circles, while China’s larger northern and western territory extends far beyond them.
