Algeria is the largest country by total area on the Mediterranean Sea’s southern coast.
Algeria covers about 2.38 million square kilometres, making it Africa’s largest country by total area. Its northern Mediterranean coast forms only a small part of its territory; most of the country extends south across the Sahara.
Other southern Mediterranean countries include Morocco, Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt. Libya is also very large, but Algeria has the greater total area.
Algeria’s modern area ranking changed in 2011 when South Sudan became independent from Sudan, leaving Algeria as Africa’s largest country. The country’s capital, Algiers, is located on the Mediterranean coast.
