Canada is the largest G7 member by total area.
The Group of Seven consists of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Canada’s roughly 9.98 million square kilometres make it larger than every other member, including the United States.
Canada’s area includes an immense Arctic archipelago, mainland territory, inland lakes, and long stretches of northern wilderness. Its population is much smaller than that of the United States, so area and population rankings produce very different impressions of the two neighbours.
The G7 is an informal forum of major advanced economies rather than a geographic organization. Canada joined the group at its creation in 1976, when the original six members invited it to participate. The group discusses economic, security, energy, and international policy issues.
