Which country is the largest by area among the world’s constitutional monarchies?

The story behind the answer

Canada is the largest country by area among the world’s constitutional monarchies.

Canada covers about 9.98 million square kilometres and is a constitutional monarchy in which the monarch is head of state while elected institutions govern the country. The sovereign is represented federally by the governor general.

Canada’s enormous territory includes ten provinces and three territories, stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean and northward to the Arctic Ocean. It contains extensive boreal forest, tundra, freshwater lakes, and mountain systems along the western edge.

Australia is another very large constitutional monarchy, but its area is smaller. Saudi Arabia is an absolute monarchy rather than a constitutional monarchy under the usual classification, while Spain is a constitutional monarchy but is far smaller. Canada’s constitutional framework developed from British parliamentary traditions and was patriated in 1982.
