Canada is the largest country by area among countries with English as an official language.
Canada covers about 9.98 million square kilometres and recognizes English and French as its two official languages at the federal level. That makes it larger than Australia, India and every other sovereign country where English has official status.
Official-language rules differ between countries. In some places English is the sole official language; in others it shares that status with one or more national or regional languages. India, for example, uses English for official purposes alongside Hindi at the Union level, but its constitutional language arrangements are more complex.
Canada’s bilingual federal system reflects its British and French colonial history. English is especially dominant in most provinces, while French is the main language of Quebec and has official status in New Brunswick.
