Russia is the largest country spanning both Europe and Asia.
Russia covers about 17.1 million square kilometres, making it the world’s largest country by total area. The Ural Mountains are commonly used as part of the geographic boundary between European Russia and Asian Russia.
Most of Russia’s landmass lies east of the Urals in northern Asia, while much of its population and several major cities are in the European portion. Moscow and Saint Petersburg are both in European Russia.
The Europe–Asia boundary is a geographic convention rather than a political border, so exact definitions can vary slightly. Even under the standard continental division, Russia is unquestionably the largest transcontinental country. Turkey and Kazakhstan also span the two continents but are far smaller.
