The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is in Spain.
More specifically, it stands in Bilbao, the largest city in Spain’s Basque Country. The museum opened in 1997 as a major cultural project intended to help transform the city’s former industrial waterfront.
Frank Gehry designed the building, whose curving forms are covered partly with titanium panels, limestone, and glass. Its location beside the Nervion River and its highly recognizable architecture helped make it one of the best-known museums of modern and contemporary art in Europe.
Bilbao is sometimes described simply as a Basque city, but the Basque Country spans territory in both Spain and France. The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao itself is firmly located on the Spanish side, in the autonomous community of the Basque Country.
