Which country is home to the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building?

The story behind the answer

The United Arab Emirates is home to the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building.

The skyscraper stands in Dubai and reaches 828 metres, including its spire. It opened officially on 4 January 2010 as the centerpiece of the large-scale Downtown Dubai development. The tower was designed by the Chicago-based architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, with Adrian Smith serving as chief architect.

The building was initially known during construction as Burj Dubai. It was renamed Burj Khalifa in honor of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, then president of the United Arab Emirates. The UAE is a federation of seven emirates, and Dubai is one of them.

A common mix-up is confusing the Burj Khalifa with the Burj Al Arab, another famous Dubai landmark. The Burj Al Arab is a sail-shaped hotel, while the Burj Khalifa is a mixed-use skyscraper containing offices, residences, observation decks, and the Armani Hotel.
