Fiat was founded in Turin, Italy, on July 11, 1899. Its original Italian name was Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino, meaning “Italian Automobile Factory of Turin”; the acronym FIAT became the company’s familiar name and brand.
The company grew from an early Italian car manufacturer into a global automaker known for compact, affordable models. Famous examples include the Fiat 500, introduced in 1957, and the front-wheel-drive Fiat 128, launched in 1969.
Fiat is sometimes confused with Ferrari because both are strongly associated with Italy and have historic links within the Italian automotive industry. They are separate brands. Today, Fiat is part of Stellantis, the multinational automotive group formed in 2021 through the merger of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and France’s Groupe PSA.
