Mexico is home to the ancient city of Teotihuacan, known for the Pyramid of the Sun.
Teotihuacan lies in the Basin of Mexico, about 40 kilometres northeast of modern Mexico City. The city was established centuries before the rise of the Aztec Empire and became one of the largest urban centres in the ancient Americas.
Its ceremonial core includes the Pyramid of the Sun, the Pyramid of the Moon and the Avenue of the Dead. Teotihuacan's builders also created apartment compounds, temples and murals. The city's original name is unknown; “Teotihuacan” is a Nahuatl name used by the Aztecs and generally translated as “the place where the gods were created.”
The city reached its peak around the first half of the first millennium CE and was later abandoned. Its cultural influence extended across Mesoamerica. Teotihuacan became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
